The St. Louis Cardinals are eager to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado, though his no-trade clause and remaining $52 million on his contract make this a challenge.

However, Arenado has reportedly approved trades to six teams, and the Cardinals are open to covering part of the contract to facilitate a move.

One team on Arenado’s list is the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are always looking to enhance their roster. Recently, Thomas Gauvain of RedBird Rants proposed a trade that would send Arenado to Los Angeles in exchange for top pitching prospect.

The proposed trade details are as follows:

Los Angeles Dodgers receive: 3B Nolan Arenado, $20 million
St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Bobby Miller

Gauvain notes, “The Cardinals would get a solid starting pitcher in Miller, giving up only Arenado and some cash. Although Miller had a rough 2024 with an 8.52 ERA over 56 innings, his 2023 performance was impressive, posting a 3.76 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 124.1 innings and a 114 ERA+.”

He also points out that the Dodgers, already over the luxury tax, would be willing to accept the cash in addition to Arenado. Miller’s stock has dropped after a tough 2024, making this trade beneficial for both sides. Gauvain suggests the Cardinals may need to add more cash or another prospect to make the deal more enticing.

This trade could work well for both teams. Miller likely doesn’t have a place in the Dodgers’ rotation with their ongoing star acquisitions, while he could be a valuable addition to the Cardinals’ young pitching staff.

For the Cardinals, taking on $20 million and offloading the remaining $32 million of Arenado’s deal would be a positive. The main issue would be whether the Dodgers view Arenado as a significant upgrade for their infield. Overall, this deal could strengthen both teams, with the Dodgers benefiting from Arenado’s addition.
