Some might call it a stretch, but an obvious trade candidate for the Lions has been brought up once more.
In 2022, John Cominsky transitioned from a June waiver claim to a crucial part of the Detroit Lions’ defensive line, making his re-signing to a multi-year deal in 2023 an easy decision. However, his production declined year over year, placing him on a shortlist of potential cuts for the Lions this offseason.
Given the circumstances, it wasn’t surprising that Cominsky accepted a pay cut to remain with the team. His versatility and toughness, exemplified by playing the rest of the 2022 season with a club on his hand after breaking his thumb in Week 2, have earned him the admiration of head coach Dan Campbell.
The Lions have significant competition for spots and roles on the defensive front. It’s uncertain where Cominsky fits among players like Marcus Davenport, Josh Paschal, Mehki Wingo, and Mathieu Betts. At the very least, he is on the roster bubble and needs to have a standout training camp and preseason.
John Cominsky again surfaces as trade candidate for the Lions
John Cominsky was previously mentioned as a preseason trade candidate for the Lions by Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report, as one of the few players they might consider trading.
Trading Cominsky could make sense if the situation arises, and Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network included him on his list of one trade candidate for each team, highlighting the broader potential for this season. “The Detroit Lions are incredibly deep at the edge position, with Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport leading the team’s talented group. Therefore, John Cominsky could potentially be moved this upcoming season, as he will potentially take a backseat to Davenport and others.”
While Cominsky shouldn’t be limited to just an edge rusher role, the point remains that he’s a tradeable asset for the Lions. If not before the season, then perhaps by the trade deadline. It’s likely that an offer would prompt his trade rather than him being actively shopped, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Cominsky is traded at some point.
