The Indianapolis Colts aren’t in desperate need of a wide receiver, but adding one could be beneficial, especially if it’s Davante Adams. The star receiver has been the subject of several trade rumors lately, though it’s uncertain if the Las Vegas Raiders will actually move him.

If Adams were traded, the Kansas City Chiefs would be an ideal fit. Pairing him with Patrick Mahomes could give the Chiefs a strong chance at winning a third straight Super Bowl. However, it’s unlikely the Raiders would trade him to a division rival.

Other teams like the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints also make sense. Adams has a history with both teams’ quarterbacks—he spent years playing with Aaron Rodgers on the Packers, and he teamed up with Derek Carr in college and during his time with the Raiders.

As for the Colts, while Anthony Richardson isn’t quite at Mahomes’ level, he has the potential to become a star. Adding Adams to the roster could accelerate Richardson’s development and make Indianapolis a serious contender this season.

His Career to Date

Adams was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft after a standout career at Fresno State. He spent eight seasons with the Packers, struggling in his first two seasons to surpass 500 receiving yards but breaking out with 997 yards in 2016. The next year, Adams earned his first Pro Bowl selection and signed a four-year, $58 million contract extension. His 2020 season was one of his best, leading the NFL with 18 receiving touchdowns and earning his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod.

In the 2022 offseason, Adams was traded to the Raiders and signed a five-year, $141.25 million deal, making him the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver. In his first season with the Raiders, he led the league with 14 touchdowns and posted 100 receptions for 1,516 yards. So far this season, Adams has recorded 18 catches for 209 yards in three games.

Why the Colts Should Make the Deal

Adams has yet to play in a Super Bowl, and for that reason, he likely wants to join a contender like the Chiefs. The Colts, by no means, are seen as contenders for a Super Bowl. However, acquiring Adams could give them a legitimate shot at reaching the playoffs and potentially making an impact.

Indianapolis hasn’t been in the playoffs since the 2020 season, and they need to make a significant move to break that streak.

General manager Chris Ballard isn’t typically known for making bold moves, which makes a trade for Davante Adams seem unlikely.

Despite this, it’s a move that needs to happen. Adams could pair with Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce to form a strong wide receiver group. This would be a huge boost for Richardson in the passing game. Add in Jonathan Taylor, who is expected to return from injury soon, and the Colts could have an exciting offense this season.

The Raiders are reportedly seeking at least a second-round pick for Adams. While a second-round pick holds value, it’s a fair price to pay for one of the league’s elite wide receivers.
