For much of free agency, Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman seemed likely to re-sign with the team. However, negotiations broke down when the two sides were nearly $50 million apart. The Astros shifted their focus, acquiring Isaac Paredes to play third base and Christian Walker for first base.
With Houston seemingly out of the running, the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers are now considered the leading contenders for Bregman. Both AL East teams could be plausible fits under certain conditions.
For the Yankees, signing Bregman would make sense if they’re willing to commit another $200 million after an already expensive offseason. While the roster fit is ideal, the financial aspect could be a significant hurdle.
The Red Sox, on the other hand, would only be a logical destination if they traded first baseman Triston Casas. This would enable Boston to shift Rafael Devers to first base, sign Bregman, and install him at third base.

However, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, neither AL East team appears to be a clear frontrunner. Feinsand doubts the Yankees will spend the necessary money and sees the Red Sox as unlikely suitors unless they trade Casas.
While Feinsand doesn’t explicitly name the Tigers as the favorites, his skepticism about the Yankees and Red Sox suggests Detroit could be the leading contender. The Tigers are in need of an infielder, and a $200 million deal for Bregman would serve as a significant gesture to appease their fanbase after last season’s disappointments. Still, Feinsand doesn’t rule out either AL East team entirely, leaving the possibility of a stronger push from either side. If forced to pick a favorite based on Feinsand’s comments, the Tigers seem to have the edge.
