The Boston Red Sox have bolstered their starting rotation this offseason by acquiring Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler. These additions suggest they are unlikely to retain veteran pitcher.
Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein projected that He could leave Boston and sign with the Toronto Blue Jays on a two-year, $40 million deal with an opt-out clause.
“The downside with Him is that he hasn’t finished any of the past four seasons with an ERA under 4.00, and signing him would require teams to forfeit draft capital,” Finkelstein wrote. “However, the Toronto Blue Jays might be desperate enough at this stage of the offseason to overlook that cost. The Jays have missed out on most of their top free-agent targets, many of whom were tied to qualifying offers.”
Over the last five seasons, He has started 107 games for the Red Sox. A move to the Blue Jays would give him the chance to prove Boston wrong for letting him go.
The Blue Jays have struggled to land marquee free agents but did acquire Andrés Giménez via trade. While a haul of Giménez and Pivetta may not have been their initial goal, it would still strengthen their roster.
Pivetta could be a reliable addition to the back end of Toronto’s rotation, complementing Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, and Chris Bassitt. He has already excelled in two career starts against the Red Sox, posting a 0.69 ERA with 15 strikeouts. Additionally, Pivetta has a solid 3.74 ERA in seven career starts at Rogers Centre, making him a good fit for the Blue Jays.
