The Boston Red Sox missed out on signing Juan Soto in free agency but have recently been linked to another superstar.

St. Louis Cardinals’ standout third baseman Nolan Arenado is reportedly willing to waive his no-trade clause for six teams, including the Red Sox. Acquiring Arenado could allow Boston to shift Rafael Devers to first base and feel comfortable trading Triston Casas.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed a trade scenario where the Red Sox send Masataka Yoshida and prospect Yoeilin Cespedes (ranked No. 5 in their system) to the Cardinals in exchange for Arenado.

Unlike other Arenado trade rumors, this deal might not require the Cardinals to take on a portion of his contract. Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Rockies in 2019 before being traded to St. Louis.

The trade would give the Red Sox an elite player while offloading Yoshida’s contract. Yoshida signed a five-year, $90 million deal in 2023 but has underperformed, posting a .285 batting average and .775 OPS with 25 home runs in 248 games. Despite being a strong hitter in Nippon Professional Baseball, he hasn’t lived up to expectations in MLB.

Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover, and six-time Platinum Glover, could be the impact player the Red Sox need. Even in a down year, Arenado hit .272 with 16 home runs.

This trade could also benefit the Cardinals as they rebuild, adding a solid hitter in Yoshida and a top prospect to their young roster. For the Red Sox, Arenado might just be the superstar they’ve been searching for this offseason.
