Rumors about the Boston Red Sox potentially trading for Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo are gaining momentum. A prominent MLB insider recently outlined a trade scenario that could be a “win-win” for both teams.

Entering the offseason, the Red Sox front office was under clear orders to upgrade the roster at all costs—a response to three consecutive seasons of mediocrity. This urgency led them to aggressively pursue top free agent Juan Soto.

Despite their efforts, Boston ultimately fell short to the New York Mets in the race for Soto. However, they quickly shifted gears and made a splash by acquiring All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet in a blockbuster trade, securing one of the best players on the trade market.

Recently, the Red Sox have been linked to several notable players, but the most intriguing rumor involves a potential deal for Mariners veteran Luis Castillo. MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand fueled the speculation on Monday, noting, “The Red Sox would seem like a strong match with the Mariners.”

The big question remains: what could Seattle receive in return for one of the league’s top pitchers? More details surfaced on Tuesday, further stoking the buzz.

Luis Castillo’s 2024 Stats:
11-12 record, 3.64 ERA, 1.169 WHIP, 175 strikeouts, 175.1 innings pitched.

Boston Red Sox would have to fork over a pair of top infield prospects in a Luis Castillo trade?

Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested that the Mariners should retain all of their young pitchers but be open to trading Luis Castillo, which would reduce their future financial commitments and potentially help them acquire additional offensive players. He also noted that if the Red Sox miss out on free-agent ace Corbin Burnes, they could shift their focus to signing Alex Bregman for third base, which would require moving Rafael Devers to first base.

This move could open the door for the Red Sox to trade Tristan Casas and a corner infielder like prospect Blaze Jordan for Castillo, which would strengthen their rotation. Bowden highlighted that Casas, 24, is a promising power hitter with 25-30 home run potential and won’t be eligible for arbitration until 2026. Jordan, who turns 22 soon, was drafted in the third round of 2020 and had a solid season at Double-A, hitting .261/.305/.388 with seven homers and 22 doubles.

Both teams would ideally like to keep players like Castillo and Casas, but this deal could be mutually beneficial by addressing key needs for both: pitching for the Red Sox and hitting for the Mariners.
