The Boston Red Sox are reportedly among the leading contenders in the pursuit of Nolan Arenado. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to offload the All-Star third baseman to shed his hefty contract, but his no-trade clause has added complications to the process.
While the Red Sox appear to be a logical fit, they’re unlikely to absorb much of Arenado’s salary, which has been a sticking point in trade discussions so far.
Cody Williams of FanSided has proposed a scenario that could make a deal for Arenado more feasible for Boston. He suggests a blockbuster trade involving both Arenado and Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.
“Another report from Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive on Monday linked the Red Sox to top bullpen arms, including Tanner Scott,” Williams wrote. “But if Boston could avoid taking on the bulk of Arenado’s salary while also acquiring Ryan Helsley, the trade would become much more appealing.”

If the Cardinals are willing to include Helsley in the deal, the Red Sox might be open to taking on over $40 million of the $52 million remaining on Arenado’s contract. In return, Boston could send a package of top prospects to St. Louis, addressing two key roster needs in one move.
Although there are no indications yet that such a deal is actively being discussed, it’s a concept worth watching as trade talks evolve.
