JUST IN: Blue Jays-Phillies In Two-Team Battle To Land $115 Million Star Free Agent After Blue Jays Missed Massive Contract Extension This Offseason

The Toronto Blue Jays missed their chance to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a long-term extension this offseason, and negotiations never seemed particularly close.

With Guerrero now on track for free agency, the Blue Jays face two possibilities—either securing him with a massive contract, potentially around $500 million, or having significant financial flexibility to pursue other top free agents.

Austin Owens of FanSided recently speculated that Toronto could redirect its “Vladimir Guerrero Jr. money” toward signing Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto next offseason.

“The Phillies currently have a very talented roster that could easily compete for a World Series title,” Owens wrote. “However, their core of Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Realmuto is slowly aging, and some of their key contracts are nearing expiration.

Both Schwarber and Realmuto are set to become free agents after 2025, and while either could be an option for the Blue Jays, Realmuto’s leadership at a premium position would be hard to pass up.”

Adding Realmuto would likely push fan-favorite Alejandro Kirk down the depth chart, but it would strengthen Toronto’s roster while fitting within the team’s budget if Guerrero departs.

Realmuto, who is expected to leave Philadelphia due to the Phillies’ financial constraints, remains a valuable asset despite being past his prime.

His ability to provide strong defense and maintain an OPS+ above 100 would make him an excellent fit for the Blue Jays. If Guerrero moves on, Toronto could become a major contender for Realmuto or any other top free agent on the market.
