Justus Terry’s recruitment exemplifies the issues plaguing college athletics.
Recruiting isn’t as enjoyable to follow as it was a decade ago. Ten years ago, most people had little insight into the recruitment process, only learning about visits or whether their favorite school made a recruit’s final list.
Now, however, nearly every detail is public, sometimes before the recruits themselves even know. This was especially true in Georgia football’s latest recruiting cycle, particularly with five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry.
Kirby Smart and his staff had been recruiting Terry since middle school, and at one point, he was committed to Georgia. Many expected him to sign with the Bulldogs, but in a last-minute twist, Texas flipped him. Most speculated that NIL played a major role, though it wasn’t confirmed—until Terry himself addressed it.

In an interview with On3’s Chad Simmons, Terry stated plainly: “I don’t know how else to say it—just a straight-up better NIL package.”
Terry flipped to Texas strictly for money
Terry exemplifies the issues plaguing college football and NIL. While no one is arguing against NIL’s existence, its current state is disappointing.
Georgia had been recruiting Terry since middle school and is one of the nation’s top NIL programs. By all accounts, the Bulldogs did everything necessary to secure his commitment.
Then Texas entered the picture—not by building a relationship, but by making an offer too lucrative to refuse. That single factor swayed Terry’s decision.
It remains to be seen how his time at Texas will unfold, but if he eventually enters the transfer portal after choosing the school for the wrong reasons, Georgia will be ready to welcome him back with open arms.
