Although he didn’t come with the same hype as blue-chip receivers Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson, Walker White played a crucial role in Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class. The four-star quarterback from Little Rock, Arkansas, was ranked as the fifth-best quarterback and the 41st overall player by 247Sports.

“Walker White, I think, is going to be a star. I think he’s got all the attributes of what a quarterback should look like,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said on signing day.

Father of Auburn commit Walker White: Hugh Freeze will 'win huge'

White enrolled early and participated in spring camp before his first season. A week into fall camp, Freeze remains impressed with White’s performance.

“Walker has looked incredible in 7-on-7,” Freeze said on Friday.

While White is still refining parts of his game, his natural talent is evident.

“The game is a little fast for him right now in the 11-on-11 world,” Freeze noted, “But in 7-on-7, where he knows the routes, he looks really good.”

Quarterbacks coach Kent Austin echoed this praise, highlighting White’s physical abilities.

“He’s really physically talented. He’s big and strong. He’s got a great arm. He’s naturally accurate. He can get out of trouble if he needs to,” Austin said.

Austin also emphasized the importance of White developing his technical skills as the next step in his growth.

“The physical attributes only take you so far in quarterbacking,” Austin said. “To be a real quarterback, you’ve got to become a student of the game, understand defenses, and know what defensive coordinators are thinking.”

White’s mobility, combined with his 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame, makes him stand out among quarterbacks. Austin also commented on White’s attention to detail.

“He wants to understand the ‘why,’ almost too much,” Austin remarked.

White is part of a competitive quarterback room. Although Payton Thorne is the starting quarterback, the battle for the backup spot continues.

The primary contenders are Hank Brown and Holden Geriner, but White remains in the mix as he continues to impress.

“We’ll see how they perform in live periods and scrimmages,” Austin said. “We’ll get a better sense of their ability to process, make good decisions, and throw accurate passes under real competition.”
