The Seattle Mariners reinstated shortstop J.P. Crawford from the 10-day injured list before Wednesday’s afternoon game against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Crawford will take the leadoff position and play shortstop against the Rays.

He had been sidelined for five weeks due to a fractured right pinky, which occurred when he was hit by a pitch from Tyler Anderson of the Los Angeles Angels on July 22. Crawford, 29, went on the injured list the following day.

This season, he’s batting just .204 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 77 games, a dip from last year when he hit a career-high 19 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .266 average. The Mariners made room on the roster by sending outfielder Dominic Canzone to Triple-A Tacoma after Tuesday’s game. Canzone, 27, has a .196 average with eight home runs and 17 RBIs in 67 games.
