The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation is still uncertain. On Thursday, the team brought back QB Mason Rudolph, signing him to a two-year, $8 million contract. Over seven seasons with Pittsburgh and the Tennessee Titans, the 29-year-old has a 9-8-1 record as a starter in the regular season.
On Saturday, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Michael Silver, and Alec Lewis reported that free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers has paused discussions with both the Steelers and the New York Giants as he waits to hear from the Minnesota Vikings. If the Vikings show no interest, the 41-year-old may retire.
To address the position long term, the Steelers may look to select a QB in the 2025 NFL draft. In his latest mock draft, CBS Sports’ Kyle Stackpole predicts the Steelers will choose Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders with the 21st pick.

“While the Steelers are still hopeful about Aaron Rodgers, they need a young quarterback to complement him,” Stackpole wrote. “Sanders may not have the upside of Miami QB Cam Ward, but he is incredibly tough and makes smart decisions—qualities that could make him successful in Pittsburgh.” Sanders’ draft stock has dropped since the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.
On a March 3 podcast episode, The Ringer’s Todd McShay mentioned that one team told him Sanders didn’t seem to take his interview seriously. However, Athlon Sports’ Luke Easterling still ranks Sanders as the No. 2 QB, behind Ward.
In two seasons at Colorado, Sanders completed 71.8% of his passes for 7,364 yards and 64 touchdowns. In 2024, he finished eighth in Heisman Trophy voting and led the Buffaloes to their first bowl game since 2020.
