The Seattle Seahawks might be looking for a quarterback who needs a fresh start. ESPN insider Dan Graziano identified the Seahawks as one of the top potential trade partners for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young after he was benched, despite the Panthers publicly denying any trade plans.

“Just two days after benching Young 18 games into his career for Andy Dalton, Panthers coach Dave Canales stated that Young wouldn’t be traded,” Graziano wrote in a September 20, 2024, article titled, “2024 NFL trade deadline: Top candidates to move, team fits.” “However, unexpected things happen in Carolina, and their plans could change quickly. If the Panthers feel they can’t salvage Young, anything is possible. There are likely teams interested in taking a chance on the former No. 1 pick from just 17 months ago.”

Graziano also mentioned uncertainty around Tua Tagovailoa’s future due to multiple concussions, suggesting Young could be a good fit for Mike McDaniel’s quick-release offense. He added that teams like the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks could also be potential suitors if Young becomes available.

Could the Seahawks Make a Run at Trading for Panthers QB Bryce Young?

Seattle has already shown a willingness to gamble on a potential future quarterback by trading for Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders this past offseason. However, Young’s potential could be even more appealing, especially considering he’s only 23 years old.

Geno Smith is currently playing a crucial season for the Seahawks, which could greatly impact his future with the team. Though it’s still early, Smith has performed well under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s system.

Smith is under contract for three years at $75 million, with the deal set to expire after the 2025 season. His agent sought a new contract this offseason, but Seattle declined.

Panthers QB Bryce Young’s Trade Value Remains a Mystery

Young’s future with the Panthers is uncertain, and it’s concerning if new head coach Dave Canales has already lost confidence in the quarterback after just two games. Less than two years ago, Young was the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

His affordable four-year, $37.9 million rookie contract runs through 2026, but his trade value is unclear if the Panthers decide to explore deals. We’ve seen the 49ers only manage to get a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick, suggesting this might be a “buy low” opportunity for Seattle.
