With Matthew Stafford locked in for another season, the Los Angeles Rams have secured their starting quarterback, but questions remain about the team’s depth at the position heading into 2025. Stafford’s contract is structured on a year-to-year basis until 2026, leaving the Rams to consider their long-term options under center.
One key decision revolves around backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is set to hit free agency. Many believe it would be in the Rams’ best interest to retain the veteran signal-caller, and head coach Sean McVay seems to agree.

When asked by Los Angeles Times reporter Gary Klein about the possibility of re-signing Garoppolo, McVay expressed strong interest. “Yeah, we would love to bring him (Jimmy Garoppolo) back,” McVay said. “I obviously have been very busy working through the Matthew Stafford situation, and so that is the hope and anticipation.
Now, you guys know that there may be some other interest, and Jimmy has earned the right to be able to have that type of interest, but yes. If you said, would I want Jimmy back here to be able to work in the quarterback room with Coach Dave Ragone and Matthew (Stafford), the answer is absolutely yes.”
Just last week, the Rams indicated that Garoppolo was their top option in the event Stafford departed. However, with free agency approaching, the veteran QB has the opportunity to explore other teams. Despite this, there hasn’t been significant reported interest in Garoppolo so far.
McVay’s comments suggest the Rams may have the best offer on the table, but whether Garoppolo returns in 2025 remains to be seen.
