When the Los Angeles Rams realized that the 2025 NFL Draft was packed with talent at tight end, defensive tackle, and running back, they turned to free agency to address their needs at defensive tackle and running back—at least, that appears to be the early approach. The team secured dominant nose tackle Poona Ford and has now added another running back to the roster.

There’s no shortage of talented running backs eager for a shot in the NFL, but it seems unlikely that many will get an opportunity with the Rams this season. The team has brought back a familiar face, re-signing veteran RB for the 2025 season.

In 2024, the Rams carried four running backs but struggled to find an effective way to utilize them all. Kyren Williams remained the lead back, though his production dipped from the previous year. Despite logging 88 more carries across four additional games, he gained just 155 more yards and scored only two extra touchdowns.

Turnovers also became a concern, as he fumbled five times—two more than the previous season. Some even argue that his fumble in the Divisional Round against the Eagles was a turning point that led to the Rams’ playoff exit.
Rivers had minimal impact in the postseason, carrying the ball just three times for eight yards.
While Rivers is a solid backup option, his return raises questions—especially since the Rams invested a third-round pick in Blake Corum. Corum’s rookie season was underwhelming, with the team struggling to integrate him into the offense.
Rivers’ re-signing suggests the Rams still aren’t fully confident in Corum as Williams’ primary backup. In fact, it complicates the entire running back situation.
Given the depth of talent in the upcoming draft, why would the Rams double down on their existing backs instead of bringing in fresh competition? Either they are fully committed to their current group or unimpressed with the available prospects.
I like Rivers and expect him to contribute in 2025, but his return leaves me puzzled about the Rams’ overall offensive strategy.
As always, thanks for reading.
