The San Francisco Giants remain competitive in the NL West, sitting just 2.5 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. With a long season ahead, having strong depth on both the major and minor league rosters is crucial. On Friday, the Giants took a step to bolster that depth.

According to beat reporter Shayna Rubin, the Giants are expected to sign outfielder to a minor league deal. The 29-year-old native of Vallejo, has previous MLB experience with the Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles.

“Hearing the Giants are expected to sign outfielder Daniel Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson, 29, is a Vallejo native, lefty bat, and played 36 games with CLE and BAL. Has 5 home runs in 10 games in the Mexican League this year.”

Johnson’s time in the majors was brief—he appeared with the Guardians in 2020 and 2021 before returning to the minors. He made a brief return to the big leagues in 2024, logging just one at-bat. Over 90 MLB at-bats, Johnson has hit .200 with a .242 on-base percentage, four home runs, and five RBIs—all four homers coming during the 2021 season.

He has been performing well in the Mexican League recently, and now has a chance to showcase his abilities in the Giants’ minor league system. While a spot on the active roster isn’t guaranteed, Johnson could become a valuable option should injuries strike the Giants’ outfield.

The Giants are set to face the Colorado Rockies at 10:15 p.m. EST on Friday in the second game of a four-game set. They’ll be looking to even the series after a narrow 4-3 loss on Thursday night.
