The Chicago Cubs signed left-handed reliever on Tuesday night after he chose free agency following the Mets waiving him, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

Prior to being waived, Cabrera pitched in six games for the Mets, posting a 3.52 ERA and allowing just one home run. Cabrera is returning to familiar ground in the National League Central, having spent the first four and a half seasons of his career with the Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023.

While Cabrera showed potential during his time with St. Louis, his performance declined in his last two seasons there, recording ERAs of 4.63 in 2022 and 5.06 in 2023 before the trade. After St. Louis, he played one and a half seasons with Toronto before signing with the Mets this offseason.

Following his move to Toronto in 2023, Cabrera improved with a 2.66 ERA but then saw his numbers rise again to a 3.59 ERA the next season. The Mets initially assigned him to Triple-A but called him up due to injuries. He delivered solid performances before being waived and subsequently picked up by Chicago.

The Cubs’ bullpen has struggled throughout the season. Although it’s unclear whether Cabrera will start in the minors or with the major league team, his extensive MLB experience will add valuable depth to a bullpen that has been a major weakness for the National League Central leaders.
