The Reds have re-signed reliever to a minor league contract, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Represented by Wasserman, He will participate in major league camp as a non-roster invitee.

The 31-year-old right-hander has spent the past two-plus seasons with Cincinnati after being claimed off waivers from the Dodgers midway through 2022. That year, he posted a 4.67 ERA across 33 appearances. The following season, he delivered a career-best performance, logging a 3.33 ERA over a personal-high 75 2/3 innings.

However, his momentum was halted by injury in 2024. He dealt with a nerve issue in his forearm, requiring surgery in May. He returned from the 60-day injured list in the final week of the season, making two appearances and allowing one run over two innings with a strikeout.

Due to his injury-plagued year, the Reds opted not to retain him on the 40-man roster and non-tendered him instead of offering an $800K arbitration salary.

Now, Gibaut will have a chance to earn a roster spot in spring training. His fastball velocity dipped to an average of 93.6 MPH last season, down from over 95 MPH in 2023, likely due to his extended layoff. If he can regain his previous form, he could compete for a role in Cincinnati’s bullpen.

Staggering spring training statistic that may see Ian Gibaut on the Reds Opening Day roster

The Reds have six relievers—Alexis Díaz, Brent Suter, Sam Moll, Tony Santillan, Emilio Pagán, and Taylor Rogers—who are expected to make the Opening Day roster if healthy. Nick Martinez could also contribute in a relief or starting role.

Gibaut will be among several experienced non-roster invitees, including Bryan Shaw and Alex Young. Since none of them have minor league options, they must remain on the 40-man roster if selected or risk being designated for assignment.
