The Indianapolis Colts will be without tight end Jelani Woods for the foreseeable future.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods is set to have toe surgery, as reported by IndyStar Insider Joel A. Erickson. This update follows Colts head coach Shane Steichen’s statement that Woods would be out for a substantial period after Tuesday’s joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Woods had been relatively healthy throughout most of the Colts’ training camp but sustained a toe injury in the team’s preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The former third-round pick from Virginia has had trouble staying injury-free since his rookie season, missing all of the 2023 season due to hamstring issues.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has indicated that Woods will be sidelined indefinitely after the surgery. He has played in only 15 games with two starts since his rookie year in 2022, recording 25 receptions for 312 yards and three touchdowns.

With Woods out for an extended period, the Colts will likely rely on veteran tight ends Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson, and Drew Ogletree, who have had significant playing time during Woods’ previous absences. Second-year tight end Will Mallory might also get some opportunities when the regular season begins. This injury will mark a second consecutive season of significant time missed for Woods.
