Wednesday’s rain-soaked training camp practice for the Colts may have led to a significant setback.

Westfield, IN — Today’s practice was intense, both in terms of weather and competition, but things may have escalated too far during the team’s first 7-on-7 drill.

Colts WR Josh Downs Leaves Training Camp Practice With Apparent Leg Injury

Second-year wide receiver Josh Downs was slow to get up and eventually needed assistance from two trainers to walk off the field after being tackled by third-year safety Nick Cross during the 7-on-7 session. Colts head coach Shane Steichen was visibly upset by the unnecessary tackle from Cross.

It was a reckless play that could have serious consequences, depending on the results of X-rays or an MRI. No NFL player should be taking his teammate down to the ground in this manner, which is why you often hear assistant coaches yelling, “Keep him up!” after practice plays that involve any level of contact.

Downs appeared to have injured his ankle and was unable to put weight on his leg. He was briefly examined by trainers on the sideline before being taken to the injury tent. Fellow receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce, along with starting QB Anthony Richardson, quickly visited him to check on his condition.

The extent of the injury is still uncertain, but head coach Shane Steichen confirmed to the media after practice that Josh Downs did suffer an ankle injury, with further details to be announced later.
