BULLPEN SHAKE UP: SF Giants Connected To Complete Most Interested Target

This is hardly surprising.

The San Francisco Giants are expected to be closely linked to free-agent shortstop throughout the offseason. Therefore, it’s no surprise that reports indicate the Giants are currently the team most interested in signing Him.

This information comes from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, who discussed how Kim would be a logical target for the Giants.

SF Giants reportedly very interested in Him

His situation is quite similar to Matt Chapman’s last offseason – he just seems like a natural fit for the Giants. With Chapman, the connection stemmed from his Bay Area roots, previous experience playing under manager Bob Melvin, and his ability to fill the third base spot.

Kim shares a similar background, having also played under Melvin with the San Diego Padres. Additionally, he has a friendship with Jung Hoo Lee, his former teammate from Korea, and recently hired Scott Boras as his agent, who also represents both Chapman and Lee.

Beyond the personal connections, Kim’s skills align well with the Giants’ needs at shortstop. He’s a strong defender, brings plus speed, and is reliable at the plate, even if he’s not a power hitter.

Giants leaders Buster Posey and Bob Melvin have emphasized the need to improve defensively and find diverse ways to score in 2025, and Kim’s presence could contribute to both goals.

The main question with Kim is his recovery from shoulder surgery for a labrum tear he sustained last season. There are concerns he may not be ready by Opening Day 2025, and the Giants will certainly consider this in their decision. However, if he passes a physical — always a key factor with the Giants — they should be confident he can play most of the 2025 season.

With Posey now at the helm, a deal for Kim likely wouldn’t be as protracted as Chapman’s, which resulted in a three-year contract with early opt-outs. The Giants seem intent on offering longer-term deals, making Kim a strong candidate for a three-to-five-year contract.

Expect to hear more buzz connecting Kim to the Giants this offseason; their reported interest shouldn’t be surprising.
