The Boston Red Sox have lost Triston Casas for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, prompting chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to ask Rafael Devers to return to third base.

Devers wasn’t thrilled with the request. He expressed frustration, saying the team had promised him during spring training that he would be the full-time designated hitter.

“Yeah,” Devers responded when asked if he was frustrated about the position change. “They told me I’d be DH, and now they’re not sticking to that. So yeah, I don’t think they’re being honest.”

Should Red Sox and Rafael Devers have done more to prevent latest dispute?

Transitioning to the designated hitter role was initially tough for Devers—he started the season 0-for-19—but he eventually found his rhythm and isn’t interested in switching roles now. He suggested that Breslow should look elsewhere to fill the first base vacancy.

Devers made the comments while defending himself, but the remarks reportedly caused tension in the locker room. According to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, teammates overheard the comments and “the reactions were not positive,” she wrote on X.

Massachusetts native Sean Newcomb ready to take the ball for the Red Sox

To address the situation, FanDuel proposed a trade between the Red Sox and Cubs:

Red Sox receive:

  • 3B Matt Shaw (Cubs’ No. 1 prospect)

  • C/1B Moisés Ballesteros (Cubs’ No. 4 prospect)

  • RHP Nazier Mulé (Cubs’ No. 26 prospect)

  • INF Jon Berti

Cubs receive:

  • 3B Rafael Devers

  • LHP Sean Newcomb

Shaw, a top-100 prospect, began the season in the majors but was later sent back to Triple-A after a rocky start. Ballesteros, also in Triple-A, can cover first base. The Cubs, currently leading the NL Central, would acquire a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger in Devers, bolstering their lineup with a long-term solution at third base.
