The Cincinnati Reds are aiming for a postseason berth under new manager Terry Francona. After strengthening their lineup by acquiring Him, they’ve now secured a veteran arm for their rotation.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Cincinnati is signing Wade Miley to a minor league deal. The contract includes a base salary of $2.5 million, with incentives allowing him to earn $1 million per inning pitched, maxing out at $4 million. Miley also has the option to opt out of the deal on June 1.

The unconventional structure of his contract is due to his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery. While he won’t be ready for Opening Day, the Reds are prepared to compensate him for each inning he contributes once he returns to action.

Miley was limited to just two outings in 2024, but in 2023, he posted a 9-4 record with a 3.14 ERA and a 79/38 K/BB ratio over 23 starts with the Milwaukee Brewers. Over his 14-year MLB career, he has compiled a 108-99 record, a 4.07 ERA, and a 1,361/605 K/BB ratio. He earned an All-Star nod in 2012 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Heading into the season, Cincinnati’s rotation features Hunter Greene, Brady Singer, and Andrew Abbott. With Singer as a fresh addition, the Reds will look to improve upon their 18th-ranked 4.09 ERA from 2024. Significant progress from the pitching staff will be key to their playoff aspirations.

While Miley won’t single-handedly transform the Reds into contenders, he provides valuable depth and experience. Cincinnati is willing to be patient with his recovery, banking on his ability to deliver innings once he’s back to full strength.
