Giants Trade For Former Utah Tech Catcher Logan Porter

In June, the Giants acquired Porter from the Kansas City Royals in a trade, addressing their need for catching depth after nearly running out of options in May. To bolster their roster while Patrick Bailey and Tom Murphy were injured, they also signed veteran catcher Curt Casali to a major league deal. During a period in May, Jakson Reetz and Blake Sabol were handling catching duties. Casali had been with the Chicago Cubs’ Triple-A team before joining San Francisco.

Porter, who had a strong minor league performance with a .277/.401/.466 batting line over six seasons, struggled in a brief stint with the Royals last season, posting a .647 OPS in 38 plate appearances. The Royals designated him for assignment in the offseason, but he went unclaimed and chose free agency, later returning to Kansas City on a minor league deal. There, he excelled with a 1.003 OPS, six home runs, and 22 RBI in 138 plate appearances before the trade.

Though Porter’s time with the Sacramento River Cats was brief, he managed a .716 OPS with two home runs and six RBI in 85 plate appearances, splitting time between catcher and first base. Now joining the Mets on a major league deal, Porter will start with Triple-A but could soon be an option for New York, who are currently in a strong position for a Wild Card spot with a 49-46 record.
