The Boston Red Sox are well aware that replacing Alex Bregman this offseason won’t be an easy task as he heads into free agency.
Having traded Rafael Devers with the understanding that this scenario could unfold, the team now faces even greater uncertainty with Trevor Story potentially opting out as well. If that happens, Boston will be forced to reconstruct the entire left side of its infield this winter.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggested that the Red Sox target Mauricio Dubón of the Houston Astros as a possible solution.

“Alex Bregman has already opted out, and Trevor Story’s decision remains pending,” Reuter wrote Saturday. “Even if Story stays, Boston’s 2026 infield looks heavily dependent on players like Kristian Campbell, Triston Casas, and Marcelo Mayer bouncing back from injuries or inconsistency in 2025.
The Red Sox should add a versatile infielder. Meanwhile, with Carlos Correa’s return, Houston suddenly has an infield surplus, making Dubón a potential trade target.”

In 2025, Dubón hit .241/.289/.355 for the Astros with seven home runs and 33 RBIs — his fifth consecutive season with an OPS+ below 100. However, his ability to keep his on-base percentage near .300 has helped him remain a valuable utility option.
While Dubón alone wouldn’t fix all of Boston’s infield issues, he could help bridge the gap left by Bregman — and possibly Story — as long as the Red Sox don’t have to give up too much to acquire him.
