The New York Yankees will be without Gerrit Cole this season after he underwent Tommy John surgery. Luis Gil is also out to start the season due to a lat strain, and Clarke Schmidt has been battling injuries that could delay his 2025 debut.
Given these pitching concerns, the Yankees could turn to the trade market to bolster their rotation. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa identified St. Louis Cardinals starter Erick Fedde as an early trade candidate and mentioned the Yankees as a potential suitor.
Axisa noted, “Fedde could be the best non-Alcantara starter traded this summer. He’s a very affordable rental ($7.5 million salary) who showed last year that his success in Korea was no fluke.”

With the Cardinals in a “reset” phase, as described by POBO John Mozeliak, the team is seemingly in a tough spot—neither adding significant pieces nor fully selling off assets. This situation puts them in a difficult position for the future, and trading Fedde for a prospect or two is a possibility.
Fedde signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Chicago White Sox last offseason before being traded to the Cardinals.
He posted a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts with the White Sox and a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts with St. Louis. Given the Yankees’ pitching uncertainty, Fedde could be a valuable addition, especially with Max Fried expected to carry a heavy load to start the season.
