The Seattle Mariners’ offense has been the primary factor behind the team missing the playoffs for a second year in a row. The lineup, which ranked 21st in the league with 676 runs this season, could use reinforcement heading into 2025.

Fortunately, there’s a chance for improvement, as the Mariners have been linked to a New York Yankees power hitter who’s available this offseason.

“Gleyber Torres may only sign a one-year deal, but if he has a bounce-back season, his team could extend him a qualifying offer next winter,” Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report wrote in his analysis of top free agents’ potential destinations.

“Contract Prediction: One year, $15 million. Team Prediction: Seattle Mariners.” Over seven seasons with the Yankees, Torres has posted a .265 average, 296 extra-base hits, including 138 home runs, 441 RBIs, and a .775 OPS.

While Torres had a down year at the plate in 2024, his career has shown consistency, surpassing 20 home runs in four different seasons. Even amid recent struggles, he performed in clutch moments—batting .241 with five extra-base hits, two home runs, eight RBIs, and a .745 OPS across 14 postseason games for the Yankees.

The two-time All-Star could bring steady offense to the Mariners’ second base position, a need from this past season. A short-term deal with Torres could be a smart, low-risk move with the potential for a strong payoff.
