The primary goal of NFL preseason and training camp is to avoid injuries, though they are often inevitable. Last week, the Buffalo Bills faced some challenges on the injury front, with backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky sustaining a knee injury during the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In response, the Bills signed Anthony Brown on Monday to fill the backup role.

Tom Pelissero confirmed the signing, stating, “The #Bills are signing QB Anthony Brown, per source.”

Anthony Brown has only appeared in two NFL games, both in 2022 with the Baltimore Ravens. He also got some playing time on August 10th when the Las Vegas Raiders faced the Minnesota Vikings. Now, he joins the Bills.

While Trubisky’s injury is unfortunate, it doesn’t seem likely to sideline him for long. However, the Bills needed to secure a backup who could step in if necessary, indicating a lack of confidence in Ben DiNucci, who was listed behind Trubisky on the depth chart.

Anthony Brown’s career

Anthony Brown entered the NFL in 2022 as an undrafted free agent after playing college football at Boston College and Oregon. Initially spending three years with the Eagles, Brown later transferred to Oregon, where he completed his college career with the Ducks. In his final season at Oregon, Brown had a solid performance, completing 250 of 390 passes for 2,989 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

In the NFL, Brown has had limited playing time, appearing in just two games. His only regular-season action came with the Ravens in 2022, where he completed 22 of 49 passes for 302 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Before joining the Buffalo Bills, Brown had a stint with the Raiders. Now, as the new season approaches, Buffalo fans are hoping that Josh Allen remains the primary quarterback, with Brown as a backup option.
