The New York Rangers are among the top teams in the NHL and have a strong chance of winning the Stanley Cup in the 2024-25 season. While the Rangers have made some minor moves in the offseason, one trade proposal could further strengthen their offense.
PuckPedia recently introduced a tool called PuckGM, which allows users to create their own trades. One user proposed a deal that would see the Rangers acquire forward Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators.

**Rangers receive:**
– Philip Tomasino
**Predators receive:**
– Matthew Robertson
– 2026 third-round pick
In this proposed trade, the Rangers would acquire Tomasino, an unsigned restricted free agent who was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NHL draft. Tomasino has alternated between the AHL and NHL during his first three years, suggesting a change of scenery might benefit him. Last season, Tomasino posted 7 goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 41 NHL games, and he could potentially fill a middle-six role for the Rangers.
Meanwhile, the Rangers would send Robertson, a defenseman drafted in the second round of the 2019 draft who has spent the past three years in the AHL without making his NHL debut. He would add depth to Nashville’s blue line. The Predators would also receive a third-round pick in 2026 to make the deal more appealing.
Predators Wanted More Consistency From Tomasino
Tomasino was expected to provide some scoring depth for the Predators in the middle of their lineup, but he has struggled with consistency.
In March, Tomasino was reassigned to the AHL. Following the move, Predators coach Andrew Brunette expressed a desire for the forward to play more consistently.
“We’re just looking for that consistency in his game,” Brunette said. “It’s tough to see his game some nights when he’s not ready to play. He ends up playing eight or nine minutes. Going down to play 20 minutes a night is better for his development. I don’t want him to lose too much confidence up here.”
Although Tomasino was sent to the AHL for the third consecutive season, Brunette still praised the former first-round pick.
“I’m proud of how much he’s grown,” Brunette added. “He’s a much better player than he was at the start of the year. This is just another step in being a pro. Go down, play well, and get rewarded.”
Tomasino has appeared in 148 NHL games, recording 23 goals and 47 assists for 70 points.
Rangers Having Quiet Offseason
The New York Rangers had a relatively low-key offseason, highlighted by their trade for Reilly Smith and the signing of Sam Carrick to strengthen their forward lines.
Smith, who is in the final year of his three-year, $15 million contract, is expected to take on the role of the first-line right winger for the Rangers. Following the trade, Rangers’ general manager Chris Drury expressed his enthusiasm about acquiring Smith.
“We’re very excited to have Reilly on board. He’s a player we’ve been monitoring and discussing for quite some time,” Drury said in a conference call, as reported by the New York Post. “He adds versatility to our lineup, has a winning background with his time in Vegas, and is a proven performer in the playoffs. We considered various options and had many discussions with different agents, and ultimately felt this was the best move for our team.”
Smith is coming off a season where he scored 13 goals and added 27 assists, totaling 40 points in 76 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
