The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing wide receiver Brandon Johnson, formerly of the Denver Broncos, to their practice squad. Denver attempted to keep Johnson on their practice squad, but he chose to join the Steelers, reuniting with his former wide receivers coach, Zach Azzanni, and quarterback Russell Wilson.

Johnson, an undrafted free agent from Tennessee, played two seasons with the Broncos. Notably, Azzanni had originally recruited him to Tennessee when he was the Volunteers’ wide receivers coach, making this move a return to familiar coaching for Johnson, where he could potentially make an impact.
Last season, Johnson caught 19 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games with the Broncos. Over his two-year career, he has played in 20 games, missing some time last year due to being placed on injured reserve in October.
The Steelers have been looking for additional wide receiver options, and while Johnson may not be the ultimate solution, he offers a sizable target. At the 2022 NFL Draft, he ran a 4.61 40-yard dash and drew interest as an undrafted free agent.
With several spots still open on the practice squad, Johnson stands out as an intriguing addition, especially given the team’s current needs at wide receiver. There is a chance he could eventually make it onto the field, bringing special teams potential as well.
