For a time, it seemed Nolan Arenado might be headed to the Yankees alongside Paul Goldschmidt or to the Dodgers, the team he grew up rooting for as a kid in Southern California. However, a new frontrunner has reportedly emerged in the race to acquire the 10-time Gold Glove winner.

According to a source cited by MLB.com, the Red Sox have positioned themselves as strong contenders to trade for Arenado from the Cardinals. This development comes as Boston appears ready to bow out of the pursuit of free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, who is expected to seek a deal worth around $200 million.

Arenado, who is owed $74 million over the next three seasons, could be on his way to Fenway Park—a hitter-friendly venue that might help rejuvenate his recent power struggles. The 33-year-old has a full no-trade clause, which he exercised in December to block a potential move to the Astros. However, Arenado has reportedly informed the Cardinals of his willingness to approve a trade to Boston.

Red Sox infielder Trevor Story, a former teammate of Arenado’s in Colorado from 2016 to 2020, has been advocating for his friend to join the team. Still, a potential trade between the Cardinals and Red Sox may depend on St. Louis agreeing to cover a significant portion of Arenado’s remaining salary, as well as Boston offering value in return, possibly by including first baseman Triston Casas.

Such a deal could provide the Cardinals with financial flexibility while creating more opportunities in 2025 for players like Nolan Gorman, Brendan Donovan, and top prospect Thomas Saggese.
