The Mets have signed first baseman and reliever to minor league deals. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the Meneses signing, while MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo noted the addition of Harris. Meneses is represented by the MAS+ Agency, and Harris by Gaeta Sports Management.

Both players previously played for the Nationals. Meneses, 32, joined Washington in 2022 and had an impressive rookie season, slashing .324/.367/.563 in 56 games. However, he couldn’t replicate that success in the following seasons. In 2023, he posted a .275/.321/.401 line with 13 home runs over 154 games, but his production dropped significantly this year, finishing with a .231/.291/.302 line and three homers in 313 plate appearances.

After being waived by the Nationals and clearing waivers, Meneses opted for free agency. He’ll compete for a role as a right-handed bench bat, possibly at first base or designated hitter, depending on how the Mets’ offseason plans unfold, particularly regarding Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker.

Harris, 31, has limited MLB experience, having pitched in 16 games for the Nationals in 2023. He gave up 12 runs in 19 1/3 innings, with 13 walks and nine strikeouts. In Triple-A with the Twins this year, Harris struggled, posting a near 7.00 ERA over 54 1/3 innings. Despite recent challenges, his fastball velocity (94-95 mph) and a solid 14.6% swinging-strike rate caught the Mets’ attention, earning him a spot as potential bullpen depth in their minor league system.
