Take a breath. Everything will be okay (hopefully).

Justin Herbert sustained a high ankle sprain during the LA Chargers’ Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Despite missing practice all week, Herbert managed to play in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Herbert performed well in the first half but re-injured himself in the third quarter when Cam Heyward landed on his lower right leg. He was replaced by Taylor Heinicke, raising concerns about Herbert’s long-term availability.

With multiple injuries and Derwin James suspended, many Chargers fans think Herbert should rest in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, given his toughness, Herbert will likely push to play if he’s physically able.

While there’s no definitive word yet on Herbert’s availability for Sunday, some progress has been made. Jim Harbaugh provided an update Wednesday after Herbert underwent an MRI on his ankle.

The positive MRI results are a big relief for Herbert and the Chargers. Although X-rays on Herbert’s ankle initially came back negative, they only detect bone injuries, leaving questions about potential ligament damage, which the MRI can reveal, especially in the case of a high ankle sprain.

Harbaugh’s optimism regarding the MRI results is a promising sign for both Herbert and the team, though it doesn’t guarantee Herbert’s availability for Week 4. However, it does suggest that a more severe worsening of the injury may no longer be a major concern.

Additionally, Harbaugh confirmed that Herbert is no longer wearing a walking boot. After being spotted in one following Sunday’s loss, there were growing fears about his long-term health.

Herbert’s condition will remain a key topic leading up to the Chargers’ home game against the Kansas City Chiefs and likely after their Week 5 bye. While it’s encouraging to see Herbert’s progress heading into Week 4, the Chargers must consider the long-term and ensure they protect him, even if he feels ready.

At the very least, fans can take comfort in knowing that the Week 3 setback doesn’t appear to have long-term consequences, but the Chargers will need to remain cautious, as anything is possible if they aren’t careful.
