Justin Herbert has raised concerns among Los Angeles Chargers fans after appearing to aggravate a lower-body injury during Sunday’s road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Herbert, who was listed as questionable before the game due to an ankle injury sustained in Week 2’s victory over the Carolina Panthers, was able to play against Pittsburgh. However, he exited in the third quarter and did not return.
Fortunately, it seems the injury is not serious.
“Chargers QB Justin Herbert, who aggravated his high-ankle sprain against the #Steelers and exited the game, had X-Rays that were negative after the game, source said,” reported Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on X (formerly Twitter). He added that Herbert would continue to be monitored throughout the week.
Before leaving the game, the former Oregon Ducks quarterback had thrown for 125 yards and a touchdown, completing 12-of-18 passes with no interceptions. After Herbert’s exit, the Chargers turned to Taylor Heinicke, who struggled, managing only 24 passing yards and taking three sacks in the 20-10 loss to the Steelers.
With the Chargers already 2-0, some may argue Herbert should have rested in Week 3 rather than risking further injury. Los Angeles faces a bigger challenge in Week 4 when they host the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chargers are now hoping Herbert fully recovers before their matchup with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, as relying on Heinicke to go up against the three-time Super Bowl MVP would be a daunting task.
