Amid Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s controversial exit from the Volunteers over a high-stakes Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) dispute, ESPN’s Jay Bilas has renewed his push for sweeping changes in the way college sports are governed.
Iamaleava, a redshirt sophomore, reportedly demanded to double his $2 million annual NIL deal, which created friction with the university. After skipping practices and cutting off communication with coaches, he officially left the program and entered the spring transfer portal, with three years of eligibility still remaining.
His departure comes on the heels of a wider NCAA investigation into Tennessee’s NIL operations, particularly surrounding Iamaleava’s recruitment. The inquiry focused on alleged violations involving recruiting inducements. However, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, suggesting its actions may breach federal antitrust laws, thus significantly weakening its power to regulate NIL deals.
