BREAKING NEWS: Indianapolis Colts To Land Cleveland Browns’ Superstar David Njoku In Blockbuster Deal

With the NFL trade deadline on November 5 fast approaching, the Indianapolis Colts, aiming for their first playoff appearance in four years, would benefit from making a deal. Trading for Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku could be a smart move, as he would provide the tight end upgrade they need.

Historically, the Colts don’t often make trades at the deadline. In his eight seasons as general manager, Chris Ballard has made just one deadline deal—in 2022, when he sent Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for fellow running back Zack Moss. This trade worked out well, with Moss proving to be a solid backup for Jonathan Taylor. Will Ballard make another strategic move this year to bring Njoku to Indianapolis?

Colts Must Land David Njoku at the NFL Trade Deadline

David Njoku’s Career Thus Far

David Njoku played college football at Miami (FL), where he recorded 64 catches for 1,060 yards and nine touchdowns over two seasons with the Hurricanes.
Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku Progressing Towards Return
The Browns picked Njoku in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, selecting him 29th overall. In his rookie season, he started in five of his 16 games, tallying 32 receptions for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Njoku became a full-time starter in his second season, finishing with 56 catches, 639 yards, and four touchdowns. However, he was limited to just four games in 2019 due to injury.

In the following years, Njoku remained a consistent performer. His 2023 season saw career-highs with 81 catches, 882 yards, and six touchdowns, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection. This season, despite missing three games with an injury, he has made 25 catches for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

Why the Colts Should Trade for David Njoku

This season was expected to be pivotal for quarterback Anthony Richardson’s development, but the Colts have recently decided to start Joe Flacco instead. It remains uncertain whether Flacco will hold onto the starting role for the rest of the season or if Richardson will eventually return. Regardless of who is at quarterback, adding a talented tight end like David Njoku could be invaluable.

“A receiving tight end, in particular,” wrote Joel A. Erickson for Indystar.com on November 1. “The Colts have been pleased with veteran in-line tight end Mo Alie-Cox’s contributions, but their primary receiving options at the position, Kylen Granson and Will Mallory, have seen their production dip significantly from 2023. With Flacco now leading the offense, another short-range passing target could be essential, especially as wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. plays through a challenging back injury.”

The Colts boast several strong offensive talents like Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and rising star Alec Pierce. Adding a reliable pass-catching option like Njoku would give the quarterback another weapon.

At 4-4, Indianapolis holds second place in the AFC South, trailing the Houston Texans. While the division title may be a long shot, a playoff spot is still within reach. It’s time for GM Chris Ballard to act and bring playoff football back to Indianapolis.
