All indications suggest that J.J. McCarthy is set to be the Vikings’ starting quarterback moving forward.
The situation became clearer last week when multiple reports confirmed that Minnesota was no longer pursuing Aaron Rodgers.
However, McCarthy shared an interesting detail with Kay Adams on Tuesday morning before teeing off at the NFLPA Classic in Mayakoba, Mexico. When asked on the Up & Adams Show when he was officially named the starter, McCarthy responded, “They haven’t told me.”
“I’m happy they didn’t because I want to earn it every single day,” he added. “I never want it to be handed to me. It’s such a privilege and opportunity, and I’m going to make the most of it.”
It’s not entirely surprising that the Vikings haven’t publicly committed to McCarthy as their starter, given his lack of experience.
Despite being selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and showing promise during training camp, McCarthy has yet to take an official snap after suffering a torn meniscus in an exhibition game as a rookie.
While the injury was frustrating at the time, McCarthy now sees it as a blessing in disguise, helping him stay grounded and focused.

“It was the ultimate blessing because it brought stillness,” McCarthy said. “For young guys, finding a consistent routine is huge. That was the biggest thing for me.”
McCarthy also benefited from watching Sam Darnold lead the Vikings to the playoffs last season, an experience that should help him when he eventually takes over under center.
As for his recovery?
“I’d say I’m 100 percent,” McCarthy said. “Just staying consistent with the rehab process and not wavering from that.”
