JJ Peterka has been a hot topic over the past month, and while it’s crucial for the Sabres to keep him, it appears the team is now open to trade discussions involving the young German forward.
On his 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman revealed that Buffalo’s stance on Peterka has shifted. Initially, the Sabres were unwilling to move him, but recently, Friedman noted, “they are at least now listening on it and I think that’s recent.”
This is hardly reassuring news for Sabres fans. According to Friedman, “People know Peterka isn’t happy and it’s believed he would like to go somewhere else. I just think reality is sinking in a little bit.”

While many fans saw this coming, it’s still tough to accept. The Sabres haven’t had much success for over a decade, aside from a single season where they came within a point of the playoffs. Year after year, it’s been a string of losing seasons.
For long-time fans, this feels like a familiar story—poor management leading to the departure of promising talent. General manager Kevyn Adams hasn’t made meaningful progress, and we’ve seen how often talented players flourish elsewhere after leaving Buffalo.
Although it seems the Sabres aren’t eager to part with Peterka—understandably so, given his skill and upside—they’re at least open to offers. Considering the team’s situation and Peterka’s apparent dissatisfaction, Buffalo may be exploring what kind of return they could get.

Ultimately, if Peterka is traded, it could be yet another case of a gifted player leaving Buffalo, succeeding with a new team, reaching the playoffs, or even winning a Stanley Cup.
This should be a wake-up call for Kevyn Adams to make a serious push this offseason. The Sabres need to bring in impactful talent and finally build a team capable of ending their playoff drought. Hearing this about Peterka is just another blow to fans hoping for change.
