The Boston Red Sox have reportedly reached an agreement with left-handed reliever on a one-year contract worth $10.75 million, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

The deal, which remains unofficial pending Chapman’s physical examination, was disclosed to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.

Chapman, 36, provides the Red Sox with a potential closer as their current closer, Kenley Jansen, explores free agency. Over his 15-year career with seven teams, Chapman has compiled a 2.63 ERA, 1,246 strikeouts, and 335 saves—ranking 16th all-time in Major League Baseball.

Last season, he recorded 14 saves, a 3.79 ERA, and a 5-5 record, striking out 98 batters in 61 2/3 innings.

A seven-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion (with the 2016 Chicago Cubs and 2023 Texas Rangers), Chapman joins a Red Sox bullpen that struggled in 2023. Boston’s relievers blew 31 of 71 save opportunities, posted a 4.39 ERA, and contributed to the team’s third-place finish, marking their third straight season missing the playoffs.
