The Boston Red Sox have experienced a lively Spring Training, filled with infield controversies and pitching setbacks. Their annual stay in Fort Myers has been anything but dull, and some of these developments could carry over to Opening Day.

A major storyline has been Brayan Bello’s health. The right-hander has been managing a shoulder issue throughout much of Spring Training, though it hasn’t been viewed as a serious concern. However, with Opening Day against the Texas Rangers drawing near, Alex Cora might soon acknowledge that time is running out.

Red Sox Pitcher Brayan Bello Running Out Of Time For Opening Day

Alex Cora provided an update on Brayan Bello’s status while speaking to reporters Sunday morning. While he reiterated that Bello is close to resuming throwing, he also acknowledged the reality of his chances of making the Opening Day roster.

Bello is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Monday, but his availability for the season opener on March 27 remains uncertain.

Cora admitted, “He’s behind. But I think he’s been itching to throw for a while, so we took care of him, and hopefully, by doing that, he can not catch up, but be available early in the season. We’re still aiming for him to be on the Opening Day roster, but obviously, it’s March 2 now.”

This offseason, the Red Sox bolstered their starting rotation by trading for Garrett Crochet from the White Sox and signing Walker Buehler in free agency.

However, Lucas Giolito remains on a slow recovery path after missing last season due to elbow surgery, and Kutter Crawford’s Opening Day status is uncertain after aggravating a patellar injury during offseason workouts.

Given these challenges, having Bello available would be a significant boost. The right-hander posted a career-best 14-8 record with a 4.49 ERA last season and ranked third on the team with 162.1 innings pitched.

Boston still has Tanner Houck, who made his first All-Star appearance last season, and many teams adjust their rotations early in the year due to scheduled days off and potential rainouts. However, Bello’s lingering shoulder issue has been a persistent concern throughout Spring Training and will remain a key storyline as the Red Sox prepare to open the season in Arlington on March 27.
