The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with Aroldis Chapman, the hard-throwing reliever, worth $10.75 million, the team announced on Tuesday.

Chapman, 36, could take over as the team’s new closer with Kenley Jansen, the current closer, becoming a free agent.

Over his 15-year career with seven teams, Chapman has posted a 2.63 ERA and 1,246 strikeouts. His 335 career saves rank 16th in MLB history. In 2023, he went 5-5 with 14 saves and a 3.79 ERA across 68 appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates, recording 98 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.

Chapman is a two-time World Series champion (2016 with the Chicago Cubs and 2023 with the Texas Rangers) and a seven-time All-Star.

The Red Sox bullpen struggled last season, blowing 31 of 71 save chances and finishing with a 4.39 ERA. The team ended the season third in the AL East, missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
