The Cincinnati Bengals have made an unexpected move ahead of the NFL Draft.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the team is retaining running back Zack Moss after restructuring his contract.

Moss, who joined the Bengals as a free agent in 2024 to replace Joe Mixon, recorded 242 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 74 carries in eight games (six of which he started). He also added 23 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown. He’ll be 27 when the 2025 season begins and will turn 28 in December.

Following a season-ending neck injury last year, many expected Moss to be released this offseason—especially after the Bengals re-signed Samaje Perine and with Chase Brown solidifying himself as the top running back on the depth chart.

Now, Moss is expected to compete for the backup role behind Brown in 2025. This move likely means the team won’t be targeting a running back early in the draft. Moss originally carried a cap hit of $4.8 million, and the Bengals could’ve saved over $3.3 million by cutting him, according to Over The Cap.
