The Auburn Tigers’ biggest issue in 2024 was at the most critical position in football—quarterback. Heading into 2025, they aim to address this with three strong contenders vying for the starting role.

On3’s Pete Nakos identified Auburn’s quarterback competition as one to watch this spring, with three players in contention for the job.

After inconsistent play at the position—primarily from former Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne—the Tigers enter the new season without any returning scholarship quarterbacks from 2023-24.

Leading the competition is former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold. A former five-star recruit, Arnold spent two seasons with the Sooners before transferring. On3 ranks him as the 47th-best player in the portal and the eighth-best quarterback. With 10 games of experience at Oklahoma, Arnold is considered the frontrunner for the job.

Hugh Freeze didn’t stop there, also bringing in former Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels. Ranked as the 83rd-best quarterback in the portal by On3, Daniels spent three years with the Cardinal before choosing Auburn.

While he may not have the same pedigree as Arnold, his mobility and playmaking ability could give him an edge in the competition.

Rounding out the group is five-star freshman Deuce Knight. Ranked as the fifth-best quarterback and 25th overall player by On3, Knight flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn and remained loyal to Freeze’s staff.

Though he’s a true freshman, he’ll have the opportunity to prove himself this spring against more experienced competition.
