The Athletics made another round of roster changes ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Houston Astros at Dalkin Park.
First baseman Nick Kurtz was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left hip flexor, and outfielder Drew Avans was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Kurtz, the fourth overall pick in the 2024 Draft, reached the majors just nine months after being drafted. In 94 plate appearances, he’s posted a .245 batting average with a .315 OBP and .762 OPS, along with five home runs and 15 RBI.

Avans has been performing well in Las Vegas, slashing .328/.444/.858 with four home runs and 34 RBI over 189 plate appearances.
The A’s also added veteran left-hander Sean Newcomb, acquiring him from the Boston Red Sox for cash. Newcomb rejoins the team after previous stints in 2023 and 2024, though knee issues limited him to just 25 innings during that span. This season with Boston, the 32-year-old posted a 3.95 ERA, striking out 41 and walking 17 over 41 innings in 12 games, including five starts.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated pitchers Matt Krook (LHP) and Ryan Cusick (RHP) for assignment.
In another move, outfielder/first baseman Seth Brown cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas. Brown, now in his seventh season with Oakland, was hitting just .212.
The Athletics, who sit at the bottom of the AL West after dropping nine of their last 10 games, are hoping this latest round of moves will bring some energy and improved results. The timeline for Kurtz’s return remains uncertain.
