Will Washington remain for next season?

The Los Angeles Angels have decided to retain Ron Washington as their manager, as confirmed by general manager Perry Minasian, according to Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register. Despite finishing the season with a franchise-worst record of 63-99, the team is sticking with Washington.

Minasian praised Washington, stating, “He was perfect, for me,” and emphasized the importance of accountability, work ethic, and situational teaching within the team, including the coaching staff. Minasian also highlighted the value of continuity, which influenced the decision to keep Washington, especially following Minasian’s own two-year contract extension in August.

Although Washington’s first season with the Angels was unsuccessful, several factors, such as the offseason departure of Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout’s early-season injury, limited his ability to succeed. Washington had previously enjoyed success managing the Texas Rangers from 2007-2014, leading the team to six consecutive top-two finishes in the division, two division titles, and two World Series appearances.

While Washington’s first year with the Angels didn’t deliver positive results, firing him likely wouldn’t solve the team’s issues. Retaining him could foster progress, especially with the team’s young core. However, the Angels will need to bolster their roster if they want to improve, particularly after losing key players like Ohtani. Without adding top-tier talent, the team’s future success remains uncertain.
