After missing five games due to two concussions in the 2022 NFL season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa considered retirement. However, he returned for the 2023 season, started every game, and led the NFL in passing yards.

In a game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, Tagovailoa sustained another concussion. Although some media and NFL figures have suggested he should retire to avoid permanent damage, NFL Network reported that Tagovailoa plans to continue playing.

Reflecting on his thoughts about retirement after the 2022 season, Tagovailoa expressed his passion for football, stating, “I love the game of football, and if I didn’t, I would have quit a long time ago.”

This love for the game might influence his decision now, but financial considerations also play a significant role. Following his impressive 2024 season, Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension with the Dolphins, which includes a $93.171 million guarantee. If he retires voluntarily, he would forfeit much of this guaranteed money.

The contract guarantees Tagovailoa $50.046 million for 2025, which would be voided if he retires voluntarily. Additionally, it includes $74 million more in injury guarantees, covering a $54 million salary and bonus for 2026 and $20 million of his 2027 salary.

Should Tagovailoa retire due to his latest concussion, he would lose $124.046 million in guaranteed money, not including non-guaranteed earnings for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. However, if he remains unfit to play due to medical reasons, he could collect the full $124.046 million.

On Monday, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel gave a positive update about Tagovailoa, noting that he was in good spirits and working with medical staff. McDaniel indicated that the team had not yet decided whether to place Tagovailoa on injured reserve, which would mean missing at least four games.

The Dolphins are scheduled to play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CDT at Lumen Field in Seattle.
