In today’s Auburn Tigers News, head coach Hugh Freeze gives his perspective on Hank Brown’s first appearance as the starting quarterback, while an Alabama wide receiver commit plans a visit to Auburn.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Hank Brown had a standout weekend, earning the starting position over last year’s starter Payton Thorne late last week. Despite limited game experience, Brown consistently impressed during his time on the field and secured the backup role in fall camp.
The gamble paid off for Auburn, as Brown energized the Tigers’ offense. Head coach Hugh Freeze was pleased with the young quarterback’s debut, calling it an ideal start. “I thought it was a solid night with good decision-making,” Freeze told The Montgomery Advertiser. He mentioned that the decision to start Brown came after reviewing Monday’s film, noting that if Brown continues to perform well, the move could be permanent. If not, it might push the team to improve.
Freeze confirmed that Brown will start the next game, adding that the upcoming weeks, particularly with SEC competition, will give a clearer picture of the situation.
Alabama wide receiver commit sets visit to the Plains
This weekend, Auburn’s football team faces its first SEC opponent at Jordan-Hare Stadium, as the Arkansas Razorbacks come to town. Also visiting will be Caleb Cunningham, a 5-star wide receiver currently committed to Alabama.

Cunningham, ranked as the top recruit from Mississippi and the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2025 class, committed to Alabama and head coach Kalen DeBoer over the summer. However, Auburn and several other programs have continued their efforts to get him to reconsider. This visit will be Cunningham’s first trip back to Auburn since his official visit in May, and it could be a crucial step in persuading him to flip his commitment.
