Why Red Wings' Daniel Sprong's elite scoring rate poses an interesting usage dilemma - The Athletic

Sprong, originally selected in the second round by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015, has only recently solidified his place as a regular and reliable offensive player in the NHL. During the 2022-23 season with the Seattle Kraken, he enjoyed his most productive NHL season, tallying 21 goals and 25 assists for a total of 46 points in 66 games. The following season with the Detroit Red Wings, Sprong’s performance dipped slightly but remained strong for a middle-six forward, recording 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points over 76 games. Notably, he achieved this while averaging just 12 minutes of ice time per game and an offensive zone start percentage (oZS%) of 48.7%. Additionally, Sprong posted a solid Corsi For Relative (CF% Rel) of 6.8.

What Will He Bring to his Club

Signing Daniel Sprong to a contract brings valuable depth scoring to the team, something that the Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin will welcome. Sprong is a solid option for the power play and, based on his statistics, he’s proven to be highly efficient offensively. This raises the question of how much more he could contribute alongside top-line, superstar teammates. For a team in need of an offensive lift, Sprong is an excellent choice. His nickname suggests his potential impact, so it’s worth making the move.
