BREAKING: LA Chargers make an aggressive trade for wide receiver

With the NFL Draft fast approaching, the Los Angeles Chargers have multiple options for how to use their first-round selection. One of the most commonly projected choices is wide receiver, as the team is in clear need of offensive playmakers.

Holding the No. 22 overall pick, however, might leave them just outside the range to grab one of the premier receivers in the draft. That said, general manager Joe Hortiz could choose to make a bold move on draft night, potentially trading up to secure one of the top wideouts available.

Chargers projected to trade up for a wide receiver in 2025 NFL Draft

Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus recently outlined three potential first-round trade scenarios for this year’s NFL Draft, one of which features the Los Angeles Chargers moving up to target a wide receiver:

Mock Trade Details:
Chargers receive Pick No. 16; Cardinals receive Picks No. 22, 86, and 181.

Cameron noted, “The Chargers were noticeably quiet during this offseason’s free-agent cycle, particularly as it pertains to one of the roster’s most glaring needs: wide receiver… Considering the talent drop-off at the position and many teams being in need and drafting ahead of Los Angeles, general manager Joe Hortiz can’t afford to let an opportunity to add to the group slip past him a second time.”

This hypothetical trade would allow the Chargers to jump into the top-20, ahead of wide receiver-needy teams like the Seahawks and Broncos. If Los Angeles has a particular receiver in mind, making a move like this could be the aggressive step needed to ensure they land their top target.

Who could the Chargers target in a Draft Day trade-up?

This year’s wide receiver class features several exciting prospects projected to go in the first round. Among the top names are Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona, Matthew Golden from Texas, and Luther Burden III out of Missouri—all of whom are expected to be selected within the top 20 picks. That means the Chargers will likely need to move up in the draft to secure one of these dynamic pass-catchers.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, they may not have to climb too far up the board, which could help keep the trade cost relatively modest. And whatever the price, it would be a worthwhile investment to ensure star quarterback Justin Herbert has the offensive weapons he needs.

A Chargers offense that pairs Ladd McConkey with another high-upside wide receiver from this year’s class would be an exciting step toward revitalizing their aerial attack.
